The history of Telecommunications through our archive

"You have a telephone, you need it" was the basic slogan of the advertisements of the Hellenic Telephone Company (AETE), the forerunner of OTE, during the 1930s and 1940s.

Today, this admonition may seem paradoxical, but in 1940, the number of telephone connections in the country did not exceed 45.000 out of a total population of 7,5 million, while today, 84 years later, there are about 5 million telephone connections (2,5 million are provided by OTE).

The evolution and progress of telecommunications in Greece is presented through the objects of our Museum, such as telephones, telegraphy and telephotography devices, etc., but also through the Archival material, such as the illustrated advertising material of the AETE era.

The Museum's Archive includes, among other things, telegrams, telephotographs, correspondence and telephone bills from the foundation of OTE in 1949, a large number of technical documents, as well as a large number of Greek and foreign magazines concerning telecommunications.

This Archival material is classified and catalogued in order to be added to the Museum's Collections, in order to be accessible to the public, thus contributing to the enrichment of the sources for the history of Hellenic Telecommunications.
